Credit Check for Employment

let's take a look
________________

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Falling behind on your bills? It could cost you a job.

An increasing number of employers are using credit checks to screen potential job applicants. So missed payments on your mortgage, car or credit card could keep you from getting hired.

According to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, 60% of employers are using credit checks when filling at least some of their openings. Only 35% reported checking credit in a 2003 survey, and only about 13% did so 1996.

Oregon Wins with New Jobs!

let us take a look
______

Oregon’s officials see Genentech’s presence as integral to the state’s economic future and often cite the 250 jobs already created at the plant. That number is expected to grow to 300 over the next few years.

Meanwhile, Genentech’s management has a much more pragmatic view of why they chose to locate here.

Clark said the search for a new site began in 2003-2005 when introduction of three new products forced the company to increase their manufacturing capacity. A risk assessment drove them to look beyond existing California sites. They didn’t want to do final bottle-fill processing in the middle of a high-risk earthquake zone.

Clark also credited Oregon’s favorable business climate — a surprise given how much criticism the state has received since passage of Measures 66 and 67. He said the economic element of only being taxed once on product production, coupled with the support and encouragement of local and state governments, made the decision to locate in Hillsboro straightforward.

Oregon, though, will probably hold on to the idea that the Genentech plant will ultimately attract other biotechnology firms to the area, even if the company’s expansions remain on its manufacturing side.

When his turn to address the audience came, Sen. Jeff Merkley said, “The future is no longer plastics … the future is biological, a word that was essentially science fiction a few years ago.”

“Many will be touched in the future by this research,” he said, after describing how innovations in the treatment of one disease can lead to new approaches in dealing with others.

History of Healthcare Legislation

let's take a look
_______

Pivotal moments in American health care history:

_1798: The Act for the Relief of Sick and Disabled Seamen in 1798 marks the beginning of federal involvement in health care.

_1854: President Franklin Pierce vetoes a national mental health bill on the basis that it would be unconstitutional to regard health as anything but a private matter in which government should not become involved.

_1912: Former President Theodore Roosevelt campaigns as the Progressive Party candidate on a platform calling for a single national health service.

_1920: The Snyder Act of 1920 is the first federal legislation to deal with health care for Native Americans, setting up the beginnings of what became the Indian Health Service.

_1921: The Maternity and Infancy Act of 1921 (Sheppard-Towner Act) provides grants to states to plan maternal and child health services. The legislation serves as a prototype for federal grants-in-aid to the states in the area of health.

_1924: The Veterans Act of 1924 codifies and extends federal responsibilities for health care services to veterans, who receive aid if they are injured in the line of service.

_1932: The Committee on the Costs of Medical Care report is published and raises concerns about the costs of health care and the number of people lacking medical services.

_1935: The Social Security Act, providing pensions and other benefits to the elderly, is signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. National health insurance is left out of the final Social Security bill because of the opposition of organized medicine and its allies.

_1937: The Technical Committee on Medical Care, a group of federal agency representatives, is convened to advance health care reform.

_1938: A national health Conference proposes federal aid to the states to expand public health, maternal and children's services and hospital facilities.

_1939: The Wagner National Health Act of 1939, FDR's second push for national health insurance, fails as Southern Democrats align with Republicans to oppose government expansion.

_1943: The National War Labor Board declares employer contributions for health insurance to be tax free, which encourages companies to offer health-insurance packages to attract workers.

Mortgage relief slow!

The second time is the charm? lets take a look?

_________________________

New Push on Mortgage Relief

In the latest move to bolster its $75 billion foreclosure-prevention plan, the Obama administration on Monday will outline new efforts designed to increase the number of borrowers who receive mortgage relief.

The Treasury Department on Monday will announce plans to appoint officials to monitor the actions of the largest mortgage servicing companies on a daily basis. It also will announce it is requiring mortgage companies to develop and report to the administration their plans to increase the number of completed modifications, a Treasury spokeswoman said.

While more than 650,000 borrowers have been given trial mortgage modifications under the plan, few borrowers have received permanent modifications. Many borrowers complain that it is difficult to get a permanent fix even once they have made trial payments; some have been required to send in duplicate paperwork or even ended up further behind on their mortgage payments.

Rosenberg: “The U.S. is going to be grappling with a consumer who’s going to be downsizing”

David Rosenberg is one of the guys that has been getting things right on the economy for quit a long time. Let's take a look at what he is saying.....
_________________
“Right now the economy is being held together by very strong tape and glue provided by the Fed, Treasury and Congress,” he says. Rosenberg sees gross domestic product stalling in the current quarter, growing at an annual rate of no more than 1 percent in the first three months of 2010 and no more than 2 percent for all of 2010."

.............U.S. Sales of new cars and light-duty trucks dropped 40.9 percent in September from the previous month after the government’s Cash-for-Clunkers program ended Aug. 24, according to data from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey-based Autodata Corp. Tax credits for first-time home buyers -- which helped boost sales of existing single-family houses 13.5 percent since January -- will expire Nov. 30. The Fed will end a $300 billion program to buy Treasury bonds at the end of this month and wind down purchases of $1.5 trillion in agency and mortgage-backed securities in the first quarter.

Take that stimulus away, and there’s little to boost growth out of the recession that began in December 2007, Rosenberg says. The recovery will resemble the so-called jobless recovery of 2002, when the economy grew just 1.8 percent.........
